WHEELCHAIR AWARENESS DAY
APRIL 29, 2005
Twenty local students spent the day in wheelchairs to promote wheelchair
awareness and raise funds for MSCS. The Salinas High School Rotary
Interact Club members volunteered to spend an entire day confined to a
wheelchair in an attempt to better understand the challenges it
presents. "The experience was a real eye-opener for many of
the participants," said Cynthia Hess, club coordinator.
"Students found it difficult maneuvering over curbs, opening doors
without assistance, getting from one side of the campus to the other,
reaching buttons on vending machines, using drinking fountains, and much
more." Students also expressed concerns regarding emergency
options in the event of a fire or earthquake. With an enthusiastic crew
of classmates cheering them on, participants were challenged to
wheelchair races during the lunch hour by students who attend school
daily in a wheelchair. Interact Club members solicited pledges from the
Rotary Club of Salinas, local businesses and other students raising over
$1000.00 for agency programs and services.
MSCS would like to thank APRIA
HEALTHCARE for providing the wheelchairs for this event:
