This agency was founded in 1968 by Salinas resident
Mrs. Adele O'Grady and shortly thereafter merged with the National Multiple Sclerosis
Society to service the tri-county areas of Monterey, Santa Cruz, and San Benito. In
1986, the Board of Directors voted to become an independent 501 (c)(3) non-profit agency
in order to ensure that all monies raised remained in the tri-county area to help local MS
people.
We currently serve more than 1000 people with MS,
their families, caregivers, health professionals and those interested in the illness of
MS. We are directed by a volunteer Board of 12 representing many professions including public
relations, accounting, project management, sales and marketing, human
service - physical
therapy and occupational therapy.
Multiple Sclerosis Community Services (MSCS)
is not affiliated with the National MS Society, and does
not receive funding from any state or national organization.
Additionally, we receive no government assistance and are
not a United Way member agency. All funding is obtained through
annual fundraising events, private donations, participation in community
events, and grants from local service clubs and foundations.
MSCS is available as the first point of contact
for newly diagnosed MS persons and their families who seek reliable information about the
causes and effects of living with MS based on medical, scientific and real life
experiences of others with MS.
Our mission is to provide assistance for those
with MS in our tri-county area. To inform the public about MS and sponsor programs that
provide direct aid to people living with the daily challenges MS presents.
